Lucian Truscott IV proposes the most bizarre reason yet for the Democrats loss in last year’s election. His idea is that too many of the potential Democratic voters were high on legal marijuana. Yes. You heard it right. As a legal marijuana smoker, I can only reply one way. For Christ’s fucking sake, man, you are scraping the bottom of the barrel for that one.

His opinion, which he himself concedes is based in speculation and no data whatsoever, sees millions of potential voters emotionally deadened to the prospect of an authoritarian takeover of their government just failed to vote. They just weren’t scared enough to vote because they were floating on feel good marijuana.

This isn’t even worth consideration — not even worth a maybe and lets look into this further. This is bullshit with a capital B. It is just a way to avoid looking at the bigger problem that large swaths of the Democratic Party establishment are out of touch with regular voters. Hell, they are out of touch with their own voters.

I hang with a primarily liberal Democratic group and I don’t know anyone who cares about proper pronoun use or support sex change operations for children. Republicans managed to attach these really suspect ideas onto the Democratic brand. The Democratic Establishment did relatively little to change this perception. Instead of Hell no this isn’t what we are about, they downplayed the importance of the issues saying that the vast majority of voters don’t care about these issues as they only affect a small number of Americans. Not talking about an issue that is unpopular to the general population is a terrible response to the question. It is as good as admitting that these issues were indeed important to the Democratic Party but are too toxic to talk about.

If people in my liberal circles aren’t particularly worried about proper pronouns and child sex change operations, then I am pretty certain that people who have less liberal inclinations are baffled. This awkward non-response left a lot of people asking why are we talking about transexuals in the schools in the first place. Parents would much prefer children learning what a pronoun is before learning which is their child’s preferred pronoun. These aren’t issues that will capture the imaginations of mainstream voters.

Say like the homeless overrunning the streets of our cities. I happen to agree that this is a bigger problem and isn’t easily solved. It also sounds like an excuse to do absolutely nothing. Well, then, if you can’t do anything to resolve the problem, then why wouldn’t people opt for someone, no matter how awful he is, who seems willing to take on the problem. Liberal government has to perform with the resources it has and perform well. Right now the perception is that government is failing to deal with the homeless problem and, I am afraid, this perception is right.

A lot of this caution is due to concern about the rights of homeless people. Middle class people vote, the homeless do not. Political parties have to deal with reality in order to get elected. This means addressing the concerns of this larger electorate is an important step in winning elections. When people have homeless people camping out on their streets and government says we are unable to help you because the homeless have rights, well what the hell can you do then? Shrugging your shoulders in despair is hardly a motivating call to action.

In the meantime, by all means, go after the non-voting marijuana smokers if you must. But, I think a better use of our resources would be to learn how to deliver better government services to the people who vote. All I know is that after reading all Truscott’s bullshit, I need to smoke me a joint.

Every gay person’s coming out worry is the reaction of their parent’s. Will they be supportive or will they go bat shit crazy? I was terrified even though I was fairly confident that my parents would be fine and they were. It still scared me and I was in my 30″s. What if they reject me? What would I do? What would I say?

Elon Musk telling the world his child is dead to him because she underwent puberty blockers and transitioned into being a woman is disturbing. He could have kept his mouth shut or say he doesn’t talk about his family publicly. Sadly, he is done with her — she is dead to him.

It sounds very much like the daughter gives as good as she gets which might explain some of Musk’s animosity towards her. The difference is he is in the public eye. When Elon Musk speaks, people listen. Because of this, he has a certain responsibility to speak decently and thoughtfully where she does not. What kind of message is he sending to the world when a parent publicly behaves in such a horrible way towards his own child? How many children had their worst fears confirmed about how their own parents might act because of how Musk acted in disowning his daughter?

Nothing is forcing a person to say unkind things in public. Saying nothing at all delivers a message. It shows people his family is off limits for public consumption and he isn’t going to play that game just to get headlines. He is going to protect his family from the limelight especially when he has trouble with his child’s decision. People in the public eye don’t have to feed the media monster.Giving them what they want only encourages them to get even more. Musk would have done the world a great favor by modeling decent behavior.

J.K. Rowling is in a bit of trouble for misgendering India Willoughby. In a nutshell, Rowling called Willoughby a man because he was born as a boy, then transitioned into a woman. A bit of to and fro had been going on between the two about trans women being men because they were born male. There are strong feelings on both sides of this argument. Rowling thinks that there is still an argument and feels like she is free to put her two cents in; Willoughby believes that the matter is settled and that Rowling should fall in line and, if she won’t come willingly, then the police will make her.

Willoughby is wrong. Challenging Rowling in this way isn’t the answer because Willoughby has jumped the gun. The matter isn’t settled. If it had been settled people like J.K. Rowling wouldn’t be disagreeing. Rowling’s position seems quite reasonable. Rowling will defend Trans people’s rights and thinks they should be treated with dignity and respect. What she does disagree about is that someone born male has a biological structure different from someone born female and that difference matters. I am not sure why this is even a controversy because many trans women alter their born bodies in order to obtain a body more in line with their desires. Why would you need medical intervention if your body wasn’t different?

Rowling could throw Willoughby a bone and call her a woman.Willoughby’s mind is set in stone so there really is no point in talking to her about it. It would certainly make Rowling’s life easier. But Rowling, who feels harassed by Willoughby, has reached the end of her patience and has just said fuck it. If she wants to fuck with me, I am going to fuck with her back. Whether this was a good decision on Rowling’s part is beside the point. Rowling has a right to state her opinion. Willoughby may not like being called a man but Rowling has some evidence to support her contention and has every right to speak on the matter.

I would have more sympathy for Willoughby if Rowling was following her around and calling her a man publicly just to embarrass Willoughby. But Willoughby is engaging Rowling in a debate. She is keeping the dialogue going. Indeed, she is calling Rowling a bigot. If you are calling someone names, you need to be prepared to be called something back in return. If you want to stop Rowling from calling you a man, Willoughby might consider stopping her campaign against Rowling. I’m pretty sure Rowling would then stop calling her a man. But if you continue to throw punches, you should expect people to punch back.

At any rate, calling the cops is an incredibly weak response. It suggests that she is losing the argument with Rowling and that the only way for her to win is to call in the law. She is assuming the law will side with her. She may be correct. But from where I am sitting, Rowling looks more assured. She certainly is confident enough in her position to keep this argument between the two of them and not call in the cops for back up.
