I am so confused. I thought the Israelis took care of Iran’s nuclear capabilities last week. So why is Trump bombing the burnt out facilities again? Last week everyone was saying that Israel had crippled Iran’s nuclear capabilities for the foreseeable future.

Trump was making sure that Iran’s nuclear capabilities are destroyed for good. Is anything for good? I mean building a nuclear bomb isn’t all that difficult. The science is readily available. The infrastructure and materials are the hard part and we were assured that Israel had taken care of that part. Since Israel had already delayed it, what was the point of the extra bombing? A few extra months, a few extra years? Trump’s additional bombing seems unnecessary and a waste of money and effort.

Also since Israel had just bombed the shit out of Iran’s nuclear facilities, where was the urgency in doing it again so quickly. This is the excuse for failing to consult Congress. Trump needed to act quickly to ensure that Iran’s nuclear capability was destroyed. It wasn’t likely that Iran could hobble together a nuclear bomb in the next few days, so there was no danger in waiting for Congressional approval. The only problem with waiting was that Congress might no approve of the bombing.

Well, Democrat Presidents have bombed without consulting Congress, why can’t Trump? This is true and Democrat presidents were wrong to do it. On the other hand, this is hardly a defense of Trump’s action here — particularly for people who claim to be strict Constitutionalists. As every mother in the world has ever said to their children if everyone jumped off the Empire State Building, would you do it too? You are saying I should be able to do a wrong thing because everyone else is doing the wrong thing and getting away with it. It isn’t fair that I can’t do the wrong thing too is hardly a credible defense.

So in review: Trump bombed, without the consent of Congress, an already neutralized weapons sites because Iran could maybe revive their nuclear weapons capability in a couple of years. Go Team.

Tom Cotton repeatedly asked TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew whether he was Chinese and/or a Chinese Commie. Chew should be complimented for his remarkable restraint when faced with such monumental stupidity and/or rudeness. Mr. Chew told Cotten numerous times that he was from Singapore, not China and not a Communist.

When someone repeatedly asks something, there is a suspicion that the Senator is setting a trap for the person. Giving his prey several chances to admit the truth and when he doesn’t, springing into action with evidence that Chew was both Chinese and a Commie. This did not happen, so all Cotton discovered was that Chew was from Singapore and not a Communist. All facts that were known before Chew sat down for the hearing.

I first thought what an idiot but, after viewing the video, I realized Cotton was trying to connect Chew and TikTok to China and Communism without having to actually provide any facts that proves his point. Cotton will say he was just asking questions, that he in no way was saying that Chew was a Chinese Communist, he was just verifying whether this was indeed true. So without actually saying that Chew was a Chinese Commie, Cotton gets to paint Chew as a Chinese Communist because why would a US Senator ask about that unless Chew was a Chinese Commie. Cotton’s mission accomplished.

Cotton then highlighted how Chew’s views on Chinese political issues didn’t match Cotton’s which then, especially if the person is Asian, makes that person a potential Chinese Commie even if that person is a Singaporean businessman. Now I am not saying that Chew’s position are particularly brave but remember he is a businessman doing business with China. He needs to be careful how he addresses these issues. I doubt that Chew’s position on these issues are that different from any other Western business person working in China. Indeed, I would expect that Cotton would pursue this line of questioning anytime he had an opportunity to question someone.

So what did we learn from Cotton’s aggressive grilling of Chew — that Chew is not a Chinese Communist and the Chinese government is a dictatorship that Chew won’t criticize in a manner that would make Cotton happy. None of this is exactly new information but thank you Sen Cotton for confirming what we already knew while also subtly undermining Chew’s reputation in the process.

This is sad because there were legitimate questions about China and TikTok. Maybe Cotton’s colleagues addressed them with Chew in their questioning. But, of course, none of that was reported on because the exciting news was Cotton trying to get Chew to admit being a Chinese Commie.

I can’t help but to be reminded of Joe McCarthy badgering his witnesses about being Commies. For most Americans this is a bad look but, unfortunately, for ambitious Republicans it is a way to get seen by the constituencies that matter in the GOP. They want to see people who will take on the Chinese Communists head on so Cotton did everything he needed to show them he is their man and that is all that matters.

The ouster of Kevin McCarthy has caused some Republicans to engage in some mind blowing contortions to get the blame firmly pinned on the responsible party. Yes, Republicans are trying to blame it all on the Democrats.

How they got the finger pointed in this direction is pretty amazing. In order to be elected Speaker, after 15 failed attempts. which, by the way, should have given McCarthy and the Republican leadership a hint that he didn’t have the full confidence of his party and might have trouble with his bomb throwers later, McCarthy agreed to an almost complete emasculation of the Speaker’s power. So, then, due to the intransigence of members of his own party, McCarthy begin his role in an incredibly weak position.

He was further hobbled in that the people within the Republican Party most opposed to him were also the same people who thought that any compromise with the Democrats was treason. Given that the Speaker has some responsibility to keeping the government running, McCarthy was doomed. McCarthy, at some point, would have to work with his Democrats colleagues. Unsurprisingly once he did, Matt Gaetz went into action. What was surprising is the McCarthy thought he was in the catbirds seat and challenged Gaetz to remove him. Gaetz took him up on the challenge.

Just in case you haven’t noticed, the Democrats have been uninvolved in McCarthy’s troubles up to this point. Here is where they come in. McCarthy apparently was under the impression he would be saved by the Democrats. Why he thought this is still a mystery. Maybe he had conversations with them prior to the vote but, so far, no real evidence of a deal between McCarthy and the Democrats exists. McCarthy, I guess thought, because earlier in the month he made a deal with Democrats to keep the government going, that the Democrats owed him. The Democrats thought differently.

Even if the Democrats had been willing, would the votes of the Democrats have helped him in any way? Isn’t working with Democrats what got him in trouble with Gaetz in the first place? Wouldn’t the Democrats support in this situation be more evidence of his treachery? He was doomed because his responsibility to govern clashed with his bomb throwers desire to, well, throw bombs.

Before you issue a challenge of the kind McCarthy offered Gaetz, it is best to find out if you really have the votes you are depending on. Did he really think that the Democrats would give their votes without getting anything in return? Since he was the one who needed help, it was incumbent on him to ask for it. He did absolutely nothing to get the Democrats on board. He couldn’t without unleashing the rage of his nihilist fringe. It was all wishful thinking on McCarthy’s part. So the idea that the Democrats somehow double crossed McCarthy is laughable. There has to be an agreement before there can be a double cross.

It reveals a shocking lack of competence and of knowledge of the Republican Leadership and of McCarthy in particular. The Democrats are supposed to make his life difficult. They are, after all, the opposition party. His own party was in the majority and they are supposed to back him because that’s how they stay in power. Eight colleagues of McCarthy opted to bail on him. Eight people who agree with McCarthy about almost everything but his willingness to keep the government open. How is this the Democrats fault? Did anyone sit down with Gaetz and company and spell it all out for them? Tell them how this could damage the party and its ability to govern? And, if not, why? Leaving politics aside and looking at executive abilities, the Republican Leaders in the House are incompetent managers and unable to govern effectively.

Say what you will about Mitch McConnell but he knows how his institution operates and knows how to get things done. I may not agree with McConnell or his politics but I can certainly admit he knows how to use his power. He rolled the Democrats twice on Supreme Court appointments and used his power effectively to bring on as many Republican appointed judges as he could during his time in the majority. Even though he had two troublesome partners – Donald Trump and the Republican House – he still managed to use his power effectively. It sends chills down my spine to think of what he could have done if he had a more reliable president and competent House leadership.

Democratic institutions are complicated. Winning elections doesn’t give you much power and it can disappear quickly even if you are doing things well. Winning one of 425 seats only gives you a seat at the table but you have to work in the institutions you have with people there. You don’t get everything you want but you work for the best deal you can get. This is why McConnell and, for that matter, Nancy Pelosi get things done and McCarthy gets kicked to the curb.

I am disappointed that Senator Manchin and Senator Sinema are still struggling with supporting President Biden’s recovery bills but I am no surprised. I am actually surprised that so many important people are. If they had ever said yes I am supporting the final bills whatever they are, I just need to iron out a few details. Neither of them ever did. I admit they have been cagey throughout the whole process but I don’t remember them doing anything that would make me think they publicly committed to supporting the bills.

Which sadly brings me to President Biden. I have never been wild about the man but, I have to also admit, that aside from Obama I haven’t really been wild about any of the Democrats running for president. I do vote for them and I will vote for him again if I am given the same choice we had in 2020. This is, however, embarrassing. Someone should have known long before December that Manchin was uncommitted to the deals. Nobody did.

The Democratic Leadership also bear some responsibility in this. It is December, for Christ’s sake. Why are we still messing with these bills? There is a very narrow majority in the Senate – the Vice President’s vote is it. They needed Manchin and Sinema from the beginning. Everyone knows it. There is no point in talking to Republicans so that leaves the two renegade Democrats. The bill had to make these two people happy or it was doomed. Once they committed, then, to show that they indeed backed the bill, Biden and the Democratic Leadership could have tasked them with publicly supporting the bill, going on television, talking about it with reporters. This way if either of them backed out there might be a remote chance that they would be concerned about how this makes them look.

But this isn’t how it happened. The White House allowed the negotiations to drag on for more than a year only to learn at the last minute that Manchin will oppose the one bill. Why are they still dotting i’s and crossing t’s here? It sounds like the bill became weighed down with pork that senators kept adding to the bill because they knew this bill would pass. Now, I like pork as much as the next man but there should be time limit on how long the BBQ continues particularly if you are framing the bills as an urgent matter necessary for the recovery of the country.

Maybe, Manchin pulled a fast on. That’s certainly possible but the senator covered his tracks in such a way that Biden looks like a chump. Now if the Democrats want to pass a bill, they will have to ask Manchin and Sinema to tell the what they want and they will do whatever it is they want to get the bill passed. This would have been far less humiliating for Biden earlier in the year and, more importantly, would have been a much less visible capitulation and done primarily behind closed doors.

If things weren’t bad enough, the White House called Manchin a liar. He may very well be a liar. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least. But if you still need 51 votes to pass your bill, and Manchin is one of the two people you can hope to corral to your side, you might be a bit more judicious in your comments.

It is discouraging to see Biden flailing because I really don’t know where we go from here.
